Purpose
of the Chief Officer's Club
The
fundamental purpose of the C.O.C. is to be a social club for you,
the Department’s Chief Officers. The club was founded in the
early 1960’s as an idea of Division Chief Les Dutton, Fire
Prevention Bureau. Chief Dutton felt that the Chief Officers needed
a social group where they could meet and interact without concern
for rank or the para-military environment of the Department. It
was his hope that this interaction would promote the camaraderie
found at the Fire Fighter level within the Fire Station and, in
turn, promotes better working relationships. With the help of Chiefs
Stan Barlow, Ernie Hanson and Ron King, the Chief Officers Club
was created.
In
1976, Battalion Chief Darryl Lockhart, a respected member of this
Department, was struck down by a sudden and fatal heart attack.
In his memory, the members of the C.O.C. created the Lockhart Memorial
Golf Tournament. The intention of this tournament was to commemorate
his love of golf and good fellowship. In 1983, Battalion Chief John
Yoder also passed away of a heart attack while he jogged to work.
His death brought the decision to dedicate this tournament to the
memory of all the Chief Officers who have passed away. To this day,
this Memorial Golf Tournament is played in honor of those Chiefs.
In
addition to this tournament, the fraternal fellowship promoted through
this organization has inspired the development several other social
activities. The Annual Christmas Party is a gift to our wives, thanking
them for their patience each day as we perform our duties and pursue
our careers. The annual L.A. County/L.A. City Challenge where we
take on our fellow Chief Officers in a friendly but hard fought
round of golf and is planned to be held in September.
Throughout
the years, the C.O.C. has worked to bring unity among the Chief
Officers.
Sincerely,
Your Board of Directors
